When reinforced with steel and filled with concrete a rock solid wall can be built to withstand the elements.
To estimate how much grout is needed to fill those voids you need to find the volume of each void and multiply that by the number of voids in the wall.
Concrete block also known as a concrete masonry unit and sometimes called a cinder block typically has one or two holes or voids to reduce the weight of the block.
Footings should be a minimum of twice the width of the concrete block i e a typical 8x8x16 block would require a 16 inch wide footing and extend below the frost line.
Contractors elect to fill the hollow openings or voids in concrete blocks sometimes referred to as grouting after they are stacked or laid to achieve a stronger wall one with properties nearly identical to a poured concrete wall.
Cinder blocks are less expensive to work with than poured concrete in home construction projects but they are not as strong you can make up the difference by spending a little more to reinforce the blocks a project that is still less expensive than using just poured concrete.
